Maria Enzersdorf is a market town on the thermal line in the industrial quarter of Lower Austria. Until 1999, the municipality was called Maria Enzersdorf am Gebirge. Maria Enzersdorf consists of the Altort, hence the grown Maria Enzersdorf, and the Südstadt. While the Altort is located in the western part of the municipality on the slope of the Vienna Woods, the Südstadt was built east of it in the flat part of the Vienna Basin. Südstadt was designed as a planned residential and commercial area as a "garden city". The architects Wilhelm Hubatsch, Franz Kiener and Gustav Peichl, commissioned by the Lower Austrian provincial companies NEWAG and NIOGAS (today EVN), were responsible for the planning of the new administrative center of the above-mentioned companies as well as the residential and business area connected to it. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 12, 1960.
