Simmering is the 11th district of Vienna. It was formed in 1892 from the independent municipalities of Simmering and Kaiserebersdorf and small parts of other municipalities. In 1956, the municipality of Albern, which was independent until 1938, was added.

Among Vienna's districts, Simmering is known as a classic workers' and industrial district and as the site of Austria's largest cemetery, the Vienna Central Cemetery. Almost all of Vienna's transportation links with areas east and southeast of the city in Austria and its neighboring countries run through the district.
