Vacation apartments, apartments, rooms and guesthouses in Wien 23. Liesing!
Liesing is the 23rd district of Vienna. It was created in 1938 as the 25th Viennese municipal district through the merger of several previously independent municipalities and has existed in its current, reduced form since 1954/56.
Culture and sights
Among the castles in Liesing preserved from the landlord period are the Liesing Castle and the Alterlaa Castle. In the district part Rodaun the castle Rodaun, the Hofmannsthal-Schlössl and the baroque mountain church Rodaun are in close proximity. The Mauer Parish Church is an originally Gothic structure that was heavily remodeled in the 1930s. With the parish church Atzgersdorf, the parish church Inzersdorf and the parish church Kalksburg the district has three classicistic church buildings.
Between 1870 and 1873 the listed aqueducts Liesing (over the Liesing), Mauer (over the Endresstraße) and Speising (over the Tullnertalgasse) were built.
Of the 20th-century buildings, special mention should be made of the Protestant Johanneskirche in Art Deco style (built 1930-1935), the Liesing parish church (built 1953-1955) and the Alt-Erlaa residential park (built 1973-1985). One of the most famous sights in the district is the Wotruba Church in Mauer, a church composed of cubic forms designed by sculptor Fritz Wotruba.
The reason for the construction of the Kandl Chapel in Breitenfurter Straße is unusual. It commemorates an executed wife murderer.
The Wohnpark-Alterlaa, which significantly shapes the district's image, can and is also considered a modern "landmark".
Art and Culture
Main hall of the Rosenhügel film studios
The Rosenhügel Film Studios are located in the Mauer district. Built from 1919 to 1923, the film studios were considered the most modern and largest in Austria at the time of their opening. The studios played an important role in the history of Austrian silent film, as well as being the location for several classics of Viennese film, such as the operetta film Maskerade. An example of a recent major production that was also shot on Rosenhügel is The Piano Player by Michael Haneke.
Several church buildings in the 23rd district house important art treasures. For example, the Bergkirche Rodaun houses three paintings by the Baroque painter Michelangelo Unterberger, and the Parish Church Kalksburg and the Parish Church Mauer each contain a painting by the Rococo artist Paul Troger.
Furthermore, the mosque Mescidi Aksa (Arabic: the distant place of worship) is located in Breitenfurter Straße.
