Gumpoldskirchen offers a variety of cultural activities around its historic core, the Schrannenplatz: From knowledge about local history to arts and crafts and artistic offerings.
Located in the heart of the historic center of Gumpoldskirchen - on Schrannenplatz - the Bergerhaus has earned an excellent reputation over the years as an attractive meeting place for artists and visitors interested in art. In the former living quarters of the Bergerhaus, the basic structure of which dates back to the 16th century, interesting exhibitions are shown from March to October. The Bergerhaus also houses the WINE MUSEUM of the market town of Gumpoldskirchen. The palette of cultural offerings offers visitors a colorful program that includes local history, arts and crafts and, above all, artistic focal points.
The WEINBAUMUSEUM, housed in one of the oldest wine cellars, contains, in addition to various cellar and wine-making equipment, as a special attraction a completely preserved wooden tree press from the 16th century, as well as what is probably Austria's only complete vinotheque, dating from 1945 to the present day, of the autochthonous varieties of Zierfandler and Rotgipfler known for Gumpoldskirchen.
Kirchengasse leads from the town hall up to the parish church of St. Michael and, together with the adjacent Renaissance courtyards, is the jewel of Gumpoldskirchen. Strolling through this alley, one gets the feeling that time has stood still here. The Renaissance houses, which were mainly built in the 16th and 17th centuries, are now privately owned. Restaurants and wine taverns invite you to linger and enjoy the world-famous Gumpoldskirchner wines.
Probably the oldest house of culture in Austria! In the unmistakable ambience with late medieval architecture presents itself the 3er house. There we "Zünftig aufgekocht and poured". In the listed guest rooms, exquisite culinary delights await you.
The Luegerkeller was built in 1905 under the mayor of Vienna, Dr. Karl Lueger, as a storage cellar for the Vienna Rathauskeller. (This is still commemorated by a red marble plaque in the museum). In it the best wines of Austria - Hungary were to be kept for the inhabitants and visitors of the imperial capital and residence city of Vienna. Its dimensions are so huge that it could easily house the entire wine harvest of Gumpoldskirchen. Today it is owned by the Johannes Gebeshuber winery.
The town hall, completed in 1559, is still at the center of public life. Its mighty tower, which should be understood as a deliberate counterpart to the church tower, and its imposing rows of arcades on the east and south sides, characterized by the spirit of the Renaissance, make it the second landmark of our market. Its image can be found on countless wine labels. As a result, it is known practically all over the world.
At the southeast corner of the town hall stands a five-meter-high pillory, one of the most impressive monuments of legal history in Lower Austria. It was erected in 1563 (the year is engraved) as the successor to a much simpler pillory.
The mighty trough of the market fountain, dating back to the Middle Ages, today set up opposite the junction of Badener Straße, once stood in the middle of Schrannenplatz on the edge of the then still open-flowing Marktbach.
Together with the parish church, the castle forms the sacral landmark of Gumpoldskirchen, visible from afar. The complex rises on the site of a Babenberg castle church complex, whose church dates back to the 11th or 12th century. Until its reconstruction in 1931, the castle was a defiant quadrangle with corner towers and a rectangular courtyard. The core of the building dates back to the 14th or 15th century. Behind the castle there are still defensive walls with a semicircular tower.
After extensive renovation work, which was completed with the help of public funds and the municipality of Gumpoldskirchen in 2000, the former "Deutschordens Kloster", Gumpoldskirchen Castle, now serves as an accommodation facility for visitors to our village.
The Viennese hotelier with Hungarian roots, Mr. Batthyány-Strattmann took over the castle in 2016 from the Teutonic Order on lease and now also runs it as a seminar and event location. The popular Advent market also takes place here every year.
Freigut Thallern, wine culture since 1141, given as a gift to the Cistercian Order in the 12th century by Marktgraf Leopold the IV, the Freigut Thallern has been in the service of wine culture since 1141 and the 30 hectares are continuously cultivated. In 2011, the ensemble of buildings was completely renovated. In addition to an area vinotheque, a hotel and 3 seminar rooms were created. The Thallern estate is particularly appreciated by wedding couples.
St. John's Chapel was built in the 16th century. The baroque altar, designed by the Italian sculptor Giovanni Guliani, shows Jesus Christ on a cross, carved from vine wood. The baroque altar is a jewel in the otherwise quite puristic chapel.
