Doomsday stones
Doomsday Stones
The Doomsday Stones are two erratic boulders on the Mühlberg, which, according to legend, are moving towards each other. While once farmers with hay carts are said to have passed between the stones, today there is only a narrow footpath. As soon as the two boulders touch each other, the world is said to end. In fact, however, only the northern of the two stones moves, as can be read on an information board there.
In a rock niche next to the resting boulder is a Madonna that was carried on foot from Pöstlingberg to St. Leonhard in 1917. Next to it is a disused 38-meter-deep well with a sacrificial bowl.
The path up to the Herzogreitherfelsen
Herzogreitherfelsen
The Herzogreitherfelsen on the Herzogreitherberg can be seen from afar and on its summit there is said to have once been a wooden castle. It is assumed that it served as protection for the population in times of war. Partly, abutments for poles and palisades are still recognizable, as well as some sacrificial bowls that suggest ritual acts.
The cross at Herzogreitherfelsen, according to a plaque of the Verschönerungs- und Tourismusforum St. Leonhard b. Fr., was placed by a farmer in gratitude for the fact that his wife, after falling during woodcutting work, miraculously survived by hanging almost unharmed from the branch of a tree.
Sacrificial bowls
Sacrificial bowls are located on the Herzogreitherberg, Mühlberg, Predigtberg and Wimberg.
