Schönau im Mühlkreis is a municipality in Upper Austria in the district of Freistadt in the Mühlviertel. The village Schönau im Mühlkreis is located at an altitude of 635 meters in the Mühlviertel. Schönau is a large-scale municipality, bordered by the Waldaist River in the north and the Kleine Naarn River in the south.

The castle ruin Prandegg is a mighty castle ruin in the municipal area.
Rametstein Castle
Catholic Parish Church Schönau im Mühlkreis St. James: The church was first mentioned in a document around 1230, originally a branch church of Naarn. The walls of the nave are still Romanesque, the low, squat steeple dates from the 13th/14th century. Around 1516 the nave was remodeled in Gothic style (net ribbed vault). 1968 Extension of the church: demolition of the Gothic, Baroqueized choir and the Gothic west gallery by Anton Zemann, removal of the Neo-Gothic furnishings. The modern extension is asymmetrically attached to the old nave, within it the chancel, the baptistery, the sacristy and the new organ loft. The interior is composed of various individual parts. The organ (1993) with 2 manuals and 18 stops comes from the Upper Austrian organ building company St. Florian. In the church tower hang 4 bells (g, b, d, h).
Natural monuments
Herrgottsitz: A shell stone and allegedly an early Christian place of worship and sacrifice.

Sports
Schönau has a small ski area Stoaninger Alm with a drag lift and two slopes. In summer there is a speed-gliding track.
Schönau has a soccer team that has played in the 1st class north-east since 2006. Since its foundation in 1973, the team first played in the "Stoaliga" and then moved up to play in the 2nd class.
