Be inspired by the unique natural landscape around the river Danube and experience unforgettable moments in idyllic Upper Austria
Perg is an Upper Austrian municipality in the lower Mühlviertel at the northern edge of the Machland.
The town is located 35 km east of Linz and 7 km north of the Danube on the Naarn River at 250 m above sea level, has been the administrative seat of the district of Perg and the location of the district court of Perg since 1868. King Ottokar II of Bohemia granted the citizens of Perg market rights as early as 1269.
Perg owes its name to the Lords of Perg, and its economic importance from the 14th century onward to the millstone breakers' and the stonemasons' guilds, among others. Due to several devastating fires, only the parish church from the 15th century and the soap boiler house from the 16th century have been preserved from the townscape of the Middle Ages and early modern times.
Since 1938, the municipal area has consisted of the original market town of Perg and the municipalities of Pergkirchen and Weinzierl, which were independent until their incorporation. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Perg developed into the economic, administrative, medical, educational and recreational center of the Perg district. In 1969, the market was elevated to the status of a town by the Upper Austrian provincial government. Due to the above-average population growth from the second half of the 20th century, Perg became the largest town in the Mühlviertel region in terms of population.
Due to the connection to the Danube Cycle Path, tourism gained economic importance in the 1990s. Since 2010, Perg is located on the Austrian-Bavarian long-distance hiking trail Donausteig and has its own Danube loop with the Kugelmanderlweg.
