Natural monuments
In the nature conservation book of the Upper Austrian provincial government, the natural monument Ottnangien is designated. It is an old Schlier pit at the Schanze (hairpin bend of the Wolfsegg-Ottnang road), which represents the stratotype profile (type locality) of the Ottnangium, a stratographic layer of the Neogene of the Central European Paratethys, the period from about 18.3-17 million years ago, in which the formation of the Schlier basement of the Hausruck-und-Kobernaußerwald range falls. The stage was proposed in 1967 by Austrian geologists Adolf Papp and Fred Rögl, and named after nearby Ottnang.
