Weiz is a city in eastern Styria and the capital of the district of the same name in Austria. It is the largest city in terms of population in the region of Eastern Styria or the eighth largest city (ninth largest municipality) in Styria (as of January 1, 2022) and is considered an industrial city due to several industrial companies. The urban region of Weiz with the economically, socially, geographically and traffic-related connected municipalities Mitterdorf/R., Mortantsch, Naas and Thannhausen comprises 19,984 inhabitants.
As part of the municipal structural reform in Styria, the municipality of Krottendorf was incorporated in 2015.
Culture and sights
Taborkirche: Documented since 1188. Choir from the 14th century, with baroque extensions from 1644. Organ by Ferdinand Schwarz from 1769.
Basilica on the Weizberg: This late Baroque pilgrimage church stands in an exposed position northeast of the city, towering over it by about 80 meters. It was first mentioned in 1147; the current building dates from 1757/58. In December 2017, the striking building was elevated by the Vatican to the status of basilica minor.
Evangelical Gustav Adolf Church: built in 1954-1957 by Sepp Schuster and Friedl Lauber.
Kunsthaus Weiz: The modern new building with huge glass fronts was built in 2005 by architect Dietmar Feichtinger; 2 halls: Frank Stronach Hall, Prof. Hannes Schwarz Hall.
Weberhaus Cultural Center
Gemini-Haus, a futuristic revolving solar house built in the castle park on the occasion of the Styrian Provincial Exhibition 2001 (motto: energy).
Radmannsdorf Castle: built by Otto and Christoph von Radmannsdorf around 1550. Late Renaissance style. Renaissance window above the main entrance. Furnishings of the Knights' Hall are in the Landesmuseum Joanneum Graz. Despite reconstructions for official and residential rooms, the main front was essentially preserved. Today it is the seat of the district court.
