The Mur River flows through the community.
Culture and sights
Maria Trost zu Fernitz: The most famous sight of the village is the pilgrimage church Maria Trost. Maria Trost in Fernitz has been a place of pilgrimage since 1150, making it one of the oldest in Styria. The present late Gothic building was erected between 1506 and 1514.
Filial Church of St. Jacob: The Filial Church of St. Jacob in the district of Enzelsdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1152 and is considered one of the oldest church buildings in Styria. In the 17th century the church was extended to its present form.
Archduke Johann Park
In 1966, a park was created in the center of the village as a result of the sewerage system, backfilling and draining of the marshy village meadow, which covered an area of about 12,000 m² and into which sewage had been drained until then. The newly built park, including a fountain with four fountains in a square basin, was opened the following year.
In 1982, the year of Archduke Johann, the village park was given its present name: "Archduke Johann Park" in memory of the Styrian prince.
After three years of project planning and three more months of execution, the park was also redesigned in 1999 in the course of the renewal of the village center. In addition to new plantings and the preservation of old trees, the walkways and the fountain were renewed. With this project, the community was awarded the Styrian Local Renewal Prize in 2000.
In the spring of 2006, the park was expanded with funkien themed gardens. Approximately 4000 companion plants were planted to the approximately 200 varieties of funkias. Thus the Erzherzog-Johann-Park is unique in its kind in Austria.
For this effort, the municipality of Fernitz was elected "the most beautiful flower village of Styria" in 2004, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 Fernitz.
