Hengsberg is a municipality with 1497 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2022) in western southern Styria. Hengsberg is located south of Graz on the foothills of the Buchkogel in the district of Leibnitz in the Austrian state of Styria.
Culture and sights
In 1976, during the renovation of the parish church, remains of castle foundations and a crypt were discovered. These finds, together with others from the surrounding area (Roman period), are exhibited in the "Hengistburg Museum" located under the church.
Buildings
The parish church of St. Lawrence is surrounded in a ring by the wall of the former cemetery and has a mighty four-story tower with the remarkable height of 72 meters. The square tower with a pointed spire bears five bells, which were purchased in 1924. (see also: #Weblinks)

Freibühel Castle

Nature reserve
The forest area on the Buchkogel in the border area of the Murfeld and Leibnitzerfeld in the municipalities of Wildon, Lebring-St. Margarethen, Lang and Hengsberg has been declared the "Wildoner Buchkogel Nature Reserve". This is to protect the near-natural beech forest stands and the species-rich plant occurrences of this area. These plants include red beech, wolfsbane, broad-leaved, narrow-leaved and purple woodvine, lily of the valley, alpine cyclamen, Illyrian crocus, daphne, Ständelwurz, Dog's-tooth lily, Hedge hellebore, Spring knotflower, Turk's-bunch lily, Great two-leaf, Bird's nestwort, White forest hyacinth, Earth primrose, Wood violet, Grove violet.
