Culture and sights
The former Pöllau Abbey is also known as Pöllau Castle. It goes back to a moated castle from the 12th century. The frescoed hall offers a suitable setting for festive occasions. On Rosenmontag the traditional castle ball takes place.
The collegiate and parish church of St. Vitus there is not only the largest baroque church building in Styria, but also the key building for the Eastern Styrian late baroque. It was built from 1701 to 1709 by Joachim Carlone and decorated with frescoes by Mathias von Görz. The church is dedicated to St. Vitus. Since the ground plan of the church is based on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and its dome is also reminiscent of St. Peter's Basilica, the church is called the "Styrian St. Peter's Basilica". Since 1990 it has been a daughter church of the Lateran Basilica.
