Kapfenberg is the third largest city in the Austrian province of Styria as well as the largest city in the judicial district of Bruck an der Mur and in the political district of Bruck-Mürzzuschlag. The city is located between Kindberg and Bruck an der Mur on the Mürz River in the Mürz Valley. As part of the municipal structural reform in Styria, Kapfenberg was united with the formerly independent municipality of Parschlug on January 1, 2015.[1] The territory of the municipality is largely characterized by forest, which accounts for about 66% of the municipal area.

The town, which was first mentioned in a document in 1145, became known primarily for its local steel industry. The proximity to the Styrian Erzberg and water power in sufficient quantities have given rise to several hammer mills here as early as the 15th century. Especially since the takeover of the works by the Böhler brothers - today all owned by voestalpine AG - in 1894, the world reputation as a steel town was established. Today, the focus is on the production of highly specialized steel alloys for tools, medical technology, aviation as well as alloy powders for additive manufacturing (metal 3D printing). Kapfenberg's importance as an industrial city has further increased due to new high-tech businesses, including Pankl Racing. Local businesses are among the most important employers in the region.

Above the town towers Oberkapfenberg Castle, first mentioned in a document in 1173, where one of Austria's largest knights' festivals is held annually. Restored in the years after 1992, the castle and a wide range of sports facilities form the center of the town's tourist activities.
