Faistenau is a municipality in the district of Salzburg-Umgebung in the province of Salzburg in Austria. Landmark is the village lime tree in Faistenau.
Culture and sights
Thousand-year-old lime tree
Parish church of St. James the Elder
In Faistenau, the performance of the Faistenau Everyman - the play of the dying of the rich man after Hugo von Hofmannsthal in dialect adaptation - has taken place every three years since 1971. Since 1963, the play has been performed directly under the 1000-year-old linden tree, and the next play season will be in the summer of 2022.
A worthwhile excursion destination are the neighboring alpine huts on the Sausteigalm and the Lärchenhütte on the north side of the Zwölferhorn. There you have a unique view of St. Gilgen and the three lakes: Wolfgangsee, Krotensee and Mondsee (Dreiseenblick). The alpine pastures can be reached from Faistenau via Tiefbrunnau, the last stretch via a toll road almost to the huts.
The Felsenbad Faistenau is one of three river baths in Austria, and is located between the village of Alm and the lake Hintersee.
The Heimatfilm Die Sennerin von St. Kathrein (1955) as well as the ORF crime series Vier Frauen und ein Todesfall (first season; 2005 and 2006) were mainly filmed in Faistenau.
Sport and leisure
Faistenau is one of the communities in Flachgau with a focus on tourism. In addition to sports such as mountain biking, hiking, swimming, cross-country skiing, canyoning and tobogganing, there is the Gaißau-Hintersee ski area with several lifts up to an altitude of 1567 m above sea level (Wieserhörndl). At Hintersee the club "Beach Volley Faistenau" has built a beach volleyball court.
