The community Weißbach bei Lofer ...
... is located in a widening of the Saalach valley between Saalfelden and Lofer at 666 m above sea level, surrounded by a ring of the most beautiful mountains; the foothills of the Steinernes Meer, the Leoganger and Loferer Steinberge, the Reiter Alpe and the Hochkaltergruppe. Here, at the former border station, the Hirschbichl pass (1148) connects Salzburg and Bavaria.
The place name Weißbach was first mentioned in a document in 1180, the area was made arable by clearing from about 1100. For centuries, the Weißbach, from which the village got its name, was the court dividing stream between the Saalfelden and Lofer district courts and thus also the municipal boundary between Saalfelden and St. Martin.
In 1908, the Saalfelden part of Weißbach was also integrated into the neighboring municipality of St. Martin, and in 1939, St. Martin was incorporated with Weißbach into the greater municipality of Lofer. After the Second World War in 1946, the communities of St. Martin and Weißbach attempted to gain independence, which they succeeded in doing, and thus Weißbach has been an independent community since October 1946.
Weißbach bei Lofer is a municipality in the district of Zell am See (Pinzgau) in the province of Salzburg. Local districts are Frohnwies, Hintertal, Oberweißbach, Pürzlbach and Unterweißbach. The community has been part of the mountaineering villages initiative of the ÖAV since 2008. The community lies between 666 m above sea level (village center) and 2634 m above sea level (Birnhorn), surrounded by the foothills of the Steinernes Meer, the Leoganger and Loferer Steinberge mountains.
