Culture and sights
Mondsee Castle: The monastery was founded in 748 by the Bavarian Duke Odilo and quickly gained importance, especially because of its many possessions and lands. According to legend, Duke Odilo was hunting at night on a mountain on the shores of Mondsee. When the moon came out from behind the clouds and lit the way, the duke was saved from falling into the lake. In gratitude for this rescue, he had a monastery built at Mondsee. According to monastic tradition, the first monks came from Montecassino. Scholars cite old Bavarian monasteries and especially St. Peter in Salzburg as the place of origin. Soon after its foundation, Mondsee was among the outstanding monasteries in Bavaria. The monastery was famous for its writing school and book painting.
Basilica Mondsee: The basilica and parish church of St. Michael is the former collegiate church of the monastery. It was built as a three-nave Gothic structure and was rebuilt in the Baroque style in the third quarter of the 18th century. The magnificent interior was designed by the painter and sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler (1649-1723). In 2005 the church received the title of papal basilica minor.
