Culture and sights
The parish church dedicated to St. Stephen is one of the oldest churches in the Traisen Valley. The Romanesque church was expanded in the 14th century. On its top it wears a duke's hat.[4]
Kreisbach Castle
At the end of the 12th century, Kreisbach Castle is said to have been founded and built. Already in 1323 Kreisbach Castle had passed by purchase to the Lords of Hohenberg and then to the Lords of Rogendorf. In 1521 Wolfgang Jörger acquired Kreisbach Castle and Manor by purchase. The Jörgers proved to be the most zealous promoters of Lutheranism. The new doctrine quickly gained a foothold in all estates and even Catholic pastors converted. Wilhelmsburg was at this time a bastion of the Lutherans, spiritual center for all churches of the villages in the Traisen and Göls valleys.
Kreisbach Castle seen from the east
As an enthusiastic fighter for Protestantism, the last Jörger by the name of Helmhard was declared to have lost all his estates and was expelled from the country by the Catholic Emperor Ferdinand II in the course of the Counter-Reformation.
The ownerless estate of Kreisbach was sold in 1625 to the Lilienfeld Monastery, which had the castle chapel demolished and part of the former ballroom of the Jörgers converted into a new chapel. Today's Anna Chapel shows on its barrel vault stuccowork from the earliest Baroque.
Today, not much can be seen of the stately four-towered castle and its defensive wall. Even when Kreisbach was a district office, there was no investment in its preservation, and building materials were even taken from here when needed.
In 1994, the idea for the restoration and revitalization of Kreisbach Castle was born. Since October 1999, the Cultural Association of Kreisbach Castle has been working on the implementation of this idea.
