St. Pölten (official name,[1] also spelled Sankt Pölten, pronounced Sankt Pödn in Bavarian-Austrian) has been the state capital since 1986 and is the largest city of Lower Austria with 56,360 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2022)[2]. By its population, St. Pölten ranks ninth on the list of cities in Austria.

The city in the foothills of the Alps on the river Traisen has an area of 108.44 km² and is at the same time a statutory city, municipality and district. The area around St. Pölten has been inhabited since the Stone Age; depending on the definition, the city is considered the oldest or at least one of the oldest cities in Austria. On November 17, 2016, St. Pölten became the 75th city to be awarded the honorary title of "Reformation City of Europe" by the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe.[3]

In 2017, St. Pölten applied to become the European Capital of Culture 2024 in cooperation with the province of Lower Austria.
