The Austrian municipality of Waidhofen an der Thaya with 5248 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2022) is located in the northern Waldviertel region of Lower Austria. As the capital of the administrative district of the same name, it is the northernmost district capital of Austria.Waidhofen an der Thaya is located on the upper reaches of the German Thaya, which flows through the city, embedded in the Waldviertel granite and gneiss highlands, from south to north.

The Holy Trinity Column on the main square was erected in 1705-1709. The column and figures were created by the master stonemason Wolfgang Steinböck from Eggenburg. In addition, there is a balustrade enclosure with St. Mary and St. Joseph as well as St. John the Evangelist and St. John Nepomuk as corner figures, on the two-story pedestal block reliefs of Mary Help of Christians and the plague saints Rochus, Rosalia and Sebastian between corner pillars, cartouche-holding angel figures as corner crowns (inscribed with 1709) and on the top of the column a God the Father Pietà.
