Spital am Semmering is a municipality in Austria, federal state Styria, judicial district Mürzzuschlag, political district Bruck-Mürzzuschlag. Spital am Semmering is located 6.5 km from the Semmering Pass at 800 m above sea level on the Semmering Expressway (S 6).
Sport and tourism
In 1893 the Stuhleck was the first alpine peak to be climbed on skis, and since then Spital am Semmering has become increasingly important as a ski resort.
But not only winter sports can be pursued. Hiking and mountain bike trails, a mountain bike park, tennis courts, a Kneipp nature trail, a swimming pool and other recreational facilities are also offered. The Gaisschlager Mill, a working water mill in the Kaltenbachgraben, is considered a special attraction. Near Spital am Semmering are the Räuberhöhlen, which are used by climbers. In the area of Steinhaus there are also several settlements for the sports enthusiasts, including the Europe Village, the Stuhleckblick Settlement and the Südhang Settlement.
Open Air Festival
From 2003 to 2010, the Kaltenbach Open Air, an outdoor metal festival, was held annually at Kaltenbach near Spital am Semmering. In 2013, but by a different organizer, there was the Metal Invasion Festival. In 2014, the Kaltenbach Open Air was relaunched by the Kulturverein Oberes Mürztal. KOA, as the Kaltenbach Open Air is called in reference to the Wacken Open Air (W:O:A), has now grown into one of the genre-defining festivals in the European metal scene. Up to 40 bands of all metal genres perform there.
