Tourism
St. Wolfgang became a well-known tourist destination in post-war Austria with its surrounding area, but lost its importance again since the 1990s. Despite its attractive location in the lake- and forest-rich Salzkammergut landscape, St. Wolfgang is no longer one of the major tourist communities in Austria. By founding the Wolfgangsee Tourismus Gesellschaft (WTG) in 1998, the three towns on the lake, St. Gilgen, Strobl and St. Wolfgang were merged into one marketing unit. However, this did not prevent the negative development of the Wolfgangsee region. 1990 were counted at the Wolfgangsee still 1.300.000 overnight accomodations, in the year 2015 one registered 885.214 overnight accomodations according to annual report of the WTG. Managing director of the WTG has been Hans Wieser since its founding.
St. Wolfgang is the end point of the European pilgrimage trail Via Nova, which begins in P?íbram (Czech Republic) and is integrated into the European network of long-distance hiking trails.
