Culture and sights
The parish church of St. Andrew stands on a hill, which gives rise to some speculations. In the middle of the 19th century, statuettes of pagan deities were found here during excavations in the cemetery. Therefore, Celts and Romans might have used this place already. A legend tells of a warm spring not far from the church and of caves in the church hill. The thought of a pagan place of worship is therefore obvious. A Christian church on this site is attested for the year 760. The time of construction of the present church is not known exactly, but the origin of the tower is assumed to be about 1410. The late Gothic church building, which is about 100 years younger, some secondary sources speak of 1516, and which is dedicated to St. Andrew, was built by Stefan Wultinger from Wilding near Vöcklamarkt.
At the lake access of the Föttinger inn is the composer's cottage, where Gustav Mahler composed the 2nd and 3rd symphonies during his stays at Lake Attersee from 1893-1896. In the cottage, which was renovated in 1983, there is a small exhibition about the composer.
The forester's house in Weißenbach was used by Gustav Klimt for his last summer stays. In the years 1914-1916 Gustav Klimt rented this house and painted the forester's house twice - it was his only summer residence, which he also painted. Another painting shows a woodcutter's house below the Schoberstein. Gustav Klimt's discovery of Lake Attersee as a summer retreat began in the summer of 1900.
The Villa Langer was built in 1891 for Ing. Josef Brauner, the co-founder and co-owner of the Lohner-Werke in Vienna. Josef's daughter Hedwig Brauner married Friedrich Paulick's son. From this marriage came Hedwig Paulick, who was married to Gustav Langer. The house is still owned by the family. Gustav Klimt and his companion Emilie Flöge spent their last summer holiday in the Villa Langer in Weißenbach in 1916.
