Every two years, the Murau carnival takes place in St. Georgen am Kreischberg on Rose Monday, which is part of the customs in many villages of the district. Several groups are on the road in the village. At dawn, the procession sets off, accompanied by drummers. In the lead goes the "sweeper of the way", who symbolically clears the path. Only the strongest men can take on this role, because anyone can get in his way. If the path sweeper is defeated in battle, the carnival race is over. Then follow various characters, such as the "Heagreifer" (chicken grabber) in feathered garb, who steals and resells chickens and eggs on the farms. The "Schellfaschinge" wear short leather pants with white long underpants underneath, a white shirt and a ring of bells (bells) around their waist and a colorful pointed cap on their head. They walk a "Kranzl" (in a circle) in front of each house. They, the so-called "beauties" are followed by the group of "Vetteln", figures who offer their services for money or beg: Doctor, scissor grinder, cheap Jacob (peddler), horse trader with horse, bride and groom, single mother with child and beggars. After a long and tiring day there is the gathering of the groups in the village. In the evening, there is a hilarious celebration at the "Schinderhochzeit" (masked ball). The performing organizations are the voluntary fire department and the music club of the village. The carnival is included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
