Murau is the administrative seat of the district of Murau (Upper Styria) in the province of Styria in Austria. As of January 1, 2015, the formerly independent municipalities of Laßnitz bei Murau, Stolzalpe and Triebendorf were incorporated as part of the municipal structural reform in Styria.

Murau Castle: Renaissance castle, with knights' hall and extensive dungeon; knights' hall with concert performances; owned by the House of Schwarzenberg
Stadtpfarrkirche Murau hl. Matthäus: consecrated in 1296 by Bishop von Lavant, early Gothic style, frescoes partially well preserved, rare crossing tower with six bells, unique in Austria
Protestant Elisabeth Church and Protestant Diocesan Museum in Styria
Annakirche: The Annakirche is the cemetery church of the town of Murau. It was built around 1400 and has a ribbed vault, Gothic winged altar and Baroque high altar with a group of three figures Anna-Maria-Jesus, as well as abundant frescoes and stained glass. The building is allegedly located on the site of stolen hosts in the late Middle Ages.
Leonhardikirche: The Leonhardikirche is part of the Grünfels castle complex in Murau and was first mentioned in 1439. It is built in a very slender and high late Gothic style and has ornate keystones. To the west of it lies the Heiligengrabkapelle (Holy Sepulchre Chapel) with the crucifixion group. The castle hill Grünfels with the Leonhardikirche is an ornate Calvary with all the stations of the cross.

Shakespeare in Styria: The European Shakespeare Days are an annual cultural event, they were founded by Nick Allen and Rudolph J. Wojta in 2002. "Artistic Director" from 2007 to 2010 was Daniel Winder, who directs at London's Iris Theatre.
Operettenfestspiele Murau: The Operettenfestspiele Murau has been an integral part of cultural life in Murau since 1998.
Murauer Theaterrunde: Every year the Murauer Theaterrunde stages at least one musical production in its hometown, with the genre of operetta taking center stage.
