The historic town of Oberwölz with its medieval main square, the three still well-preserved town gates, the fortified towers and the town wall is the cultural and economic center of the Wölz Valley.

In 2015, the municipalities of Oberwölz Stadt, Oberwölz Umgebung, Winklern bei Oberwölz and Schönberg-Lachtal were merged to form the municipality of Oberwölz. The entire municipal area now covers an area of 210 square kilometers.  

Many leisure activities, such as the high ropes course with zipline over the Wölzerbach, the outdoor pool, beautiful hiking trails and mountain tours, the Austrian Wind Music Museum, the ski area Lachtal with the new summer offer "Wildes Lachtal" as a circular hiking trail with 16 adventure stations and much more ensure a relaxing as well as varied stay in our community.
