Oberwölz has been a municipality in the district of Murau in Styria since the beginning of 2015. It was created as part of the municipal structural reform in Styria from the formerly independent municipalities of Oberwölz Stadt, Oberwölz Umgebung, Schönberg-Lachtal and Winklern bei Oberwölz, with the new municipality also being referred to as a "town municipality". Oberwölz is located north of the Murtal in the Wölzertal.
