The municipality is located in southern Burgenland, the most important body of water is the Zickenbach. It was first mentioned in a document in 1346 as Rhoor. The name is probably derived from the
from the reeds that grow along the Zickenbach. Like the whole of Burgenland, the village belonged to Hungary (German West Hungary) until 1920/21.

Rohr is home to the largest fen in Austria. The moor is fed with water from the Zickenbach stream.
