Mureck (slow.: Cmurek) is a municipality in the district of Southeast Styria in the federal state of Styria in Austria. It is located in the judicial district of Feldbach. As of January 1, 2015, the former municipalities of Eichfeld and Gosdorf were incorporated as part of the municipal structural reform in Styria. Mureck is located in the south of Styria on the Slovenian border. In the immediate vicinity of the town are the Mur floodplains with almost untouched nature.
Culture and sights
Parish church of St. Bartholomew: dates back to 1187; during renovation work in the spring of 1998, however, remains of a Romanesque church built in the 11th century were discovered.
Town Hall of Mureck: The Town Hall is the landmark of Mureck, and unlike the other buildings, it has three floors and a six-story tower.
Town hall bell: The town hall has a baroque bell from 1737, which is interesting from the point of view of monument preservation. The bell has reliefs of saints, a coat of arms medallion, and an inscription referring to its manufacture. It is a rare completely preserved bell of the Baroque period.
Marian column: in 1665 the townspeople erected a Marian statue in the square in front of the town hall (facing east until 1938) on the basis of a plague vow. The sculpture of St. Mary with the Child dates back to that time. Around 1740 the decorated obelisk and the sculptures of the patron saints Florian (fire) and Donatus (weather) were added.
Ship mill on the Mura, repeatedly rebuilt
Auerlebnisweg Mureck: The Auerlebnisweg leads through the Mureck floodplains, which are the second largest floodplain forest area in Austria. The Grenzmur floodplains provide natural flood protection, are an important groundwater reservoir and are home to a biodiversity of rare plants and animals.
Murturm, a double helix shaped lookout tower next to the Grenzmur, in Gosdorf, since 2015 Mureck
