Learn more about the beautiful vacation apartments in Salzburg Lungau and let yourself be enchanted by the variety of leisure activities!
Mauterndorf is a market town in Lungau and the fourth largest community in the area. Mauterndorf is located in the valley of the Southern Taurach. Where this leaves the municipal area to the east is the lowest point at 1090 meters above sea level.
Starry nights and sunny winter days are not an advertising promise in Salzburg's Lungau region - the largest UNESCO biosphere park in Austria: In fact, the region has the most hours of sunshine in the country and, due to the almost non-existent scattered light, the best view of the stars.
The idyllic village of Mauterndorf lies at 1,100m above sea level and offers all the prerequisites for an untroubled active or family vacation. The historic village with its distinctive stepped gable houses at the foot of the imposing Mauterndorf Castle is a vacation idyll for families, cross-country skiers, skiing enthusiasts, hikers, mountain bikers and connoisseurs alike. Whoever comes here will be richly rewarded. With impressive views, quiet moments and sometimes also with action - for example on the adventure mountain Grosseck- Speiereck!
Culture and sights
Mauterndorf Castle: From 1253, the castle secured the important crossing over the Radstädter Tauern, which was renewed under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach on an old Roman road. The castle also served as a toll station from the late 14th century. Today, the Lungau Landscape Museum is located there.
Treppengiebelhäuser: The Treppengiebelhäuser in the center of Mauterndorf are protected monuments. Originally there were five stepped gable houses: one of them burned down and was rebuilt normally, so now there are only four.

The Samson and his two accompanying dwarfs also move out for special festivals and Samson meetings during the summer months. The Samson is carried by a man on his shoulders. After the dance, he is supported by four men. In addition, two female sutlers and a male Samson accompany the Samson.
Glacial mills: During the last ice age, three glacier mills were built in the Hammer district (near the Schizentrum), which are still well preserved today.
Roman temple: In Steindorf an old Roman temple was discovered under the garden of a farmhouse. Excavations of it can still be seen in front of the farmhouse.
