Grein is an Upper Austrian municipality in the Lower Mühlviertel in the district of Perg.
With an area of 18.42 square kilometers and with 2913 inhabitants, Grein is the fifteenth largest municipality in the district in terms of area and the seventh largest in terms of population. Grein has been the third oldest town in the Mühlviertel region since 1491 and is the main town of the Strudengau region.
Until the end of 2002, the town was the location of the former Grein District Court, which was responsible for the ten municipalities of the Grein judicial district. Since the beginning of 2003, Grein has belonged to the judicial district of Perg, and the competent district court has since been located in the district capital of Perg.
Culture and sights
Greinburg Castle is one of the oldest residential castles in Austria, dating from 1491 to 1495. Under Count Leonhard Helfrich von Meggau it received its present closed form in the early 17th century.

Town center: In the historic town center there are mainly two- and three-story town houses with predominantly Baroque facades on elongated medieval plots.
Old town hall (1563), still preserved in its original form.
Grein Municipal Theater: Rococo building from 1791, oldest original civic theater in Austria. It also houses a theater exhibition.
The Blumensträußl coffee-boiling house is located in one of the oldest houses, interior furnishings in Biedermeier style.

The Marienstein in Grein and an oak tree in the Kaiser-Friedrich-Strasse are designated as natural monuments in the nature conservation book of the Upper Austrian provincial government.
Regular events
In addition to the annual summer plays, the Grein Municipal Theater also hosts spoken theater, recitals, concerts, and poetry readings.
The Greinburg is a fixed event of the Donaufestwochen in the Strudengau, which has been held since 1995.
Since 2011, Austria's only video art festival, danubeVIDEOARTfestival, has been held at the Stadtkino Grein.
The organic Advent market takes place on and around the historic town square and in the town theater.
