Amstetten is a town in the southwest of Lower Austria, the Mostviertel. It is the seat of the district administration of Amstetten.
The municipality of Amstetten is located on historically traditional, topographically predetermined transit routes - as the eye of a needle between the 
the foothills of the Alps in the south and the granite foothills of the Bohemian Plateau, the Neustadt Plateau, which is cut through here by the Danube.
In addition to several streams (including the Gschirmbach, Edlabach, Preinsbach and Mühlbach), some of which are quite water-rich, there are two rivers in 
Amstetten: the small Url, which flows into the Ybbs shortly before Amstetten, the main river of the water-rich region.
