Grafendorf bei Hartberg is a market town with 3235 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2023) in the east of Styria in the judicial district of Fürstenfeld and in the
political district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld. Since 2015, it has been merged with the municipality of Stambach as part of the Styrian municipal reform.
The new municipality continues to bear the name "Grafendorf bei Hartberg".
Grafendorf bei Hartberg is located in the East Styrian hill country around six kilometers north of the district capital Hartberg near the border with Burgenland.
The area around Grafendorf was already inhabited in the Neolithic Age, as some finds prove. When the Romans advanced as far as the Danube around 15 BC,
today's municipal area became part of the province of Noricum. Some finds point to a settlement.
Grafendorf was first mentioned in a document in 1144 and was described as very well-known.
Culture and sights
Aichberg Castle
Kirchberg am Walde Castle was initially built as a castle around 1130. It was the seat of power and the starting point for the settlement of the municipal area.
After being destroyed by the Turks, the castle was rebuilt in 1532 by the Counts Trauttmansdorff, who owned it from 1443 to 1669.
Since 1923, the castle has been home to an agricultural school and educational center for agriculture and forestry in Eastern Styria.
