Pinkafeld is a municipality in Burgenland in the district of Oberwart (Austria). It is named after the Pinka River, a tributary of the Raab River.
The first documented mention probably dates back to 860. During the following 1000 years Pinkafeld was for most of the time with the Kingdom of Hungary. Nevertheless, as in most of the former German West Hungary (now Burgenland), the population was predominantly German-speaking since the time of Charlemagne. Historically, Pinkafeld is a town of craftsmen and burghers. The town acquired numerous privileges as early as the late Middle Ages, such as blood jurisdiction, the right to hold markets and tolls, and freedom from customs duties. In the further course of history, the citizens of Pinkafelder always had a great interest in maintaining these privileges. And indeed, the Pinkafelder privileges were repeatedly confirmed and extended by many emperors, kings and regional rulers. From the 17th century until the early 20th century, the town was characterized by the cloth-making trade.
