The origin of the village of Amaliendorf is described in a copy of a contract dated June 26, 1799, as follows:
His Excellency Count Vinzenz von Straßoldo, Obrist-Hofmeister von Wailand der durchlauchtigsten Frau Amalie, Erzherzogin von Österreich, als Herr der Herrschaft Schwarzenau, has sold in 1799 the manorial forest land of the Herrschaft Schwarzenau piecewise with 2, 3 and 4 Joch to individual parties (Dominicalabgabe von 5 Gulden pro Joch), which had to build houses within 3 years.
Archduchess Amalie of Austria (1746-1804) is the patron saint of the village Amaliendorf. She was a daughter of Empress Maria Theresa and married to the Duke of Parma. Her last resting place is in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague.
amalie03.gifThe name "Aalfang" is certainly older than the scattered settlement. As early as in 1627 we can find the "weirs of Alennfang", which means a catching place of eels. In the 16th century numerous artificial ponds were built in our area, which served for fishing and were called weirs.
The present name of the village AALFANG originates from the 19th century: Ailfang or Eilfang, dialect pronunciation "Eifaung".
Today's cadastral community "Falkendorf" probably traces its name back to the founder of the village, Count Niklas Falkenhayn, owner of the dominion of Schrems.
Today, the market town of Amaliendorf-Aalfang has an area of 8.03 km², 1,610 inhabitants, of which 430 are secondary residents, 600 dwellings. The sea level is 568 m.
