The Fossil World Weinviertel is a museum to the largest accessible fossil oyster reef on earth. This reef dates back to about 17 million years ago (Neogene, Miocene and Carpathian.[3]) The oysters living in the shallow sea of the later Korneuburg Basin were suddenly buried by a tidal wave. The exposed reef, which can be visited during guided tours, is located at the slope of a hill and measures about 20 by 5 meters; the individual mussel shells are jumbled together and have sizes of about 10 to 25 cm.
