Welcome to St. Stefan ob Leoben, the geographical center of Styria.
You are in a community that is very rich in history. This is evidenced not only by deeds of donation, which mention farmsteads in today's municipal area as early as 860 A.D., but also by the fact that the village owes its origin to a bridge over the Mura River (called "Bridge to St. Stefan"). At that time it was the only crossing between Knittelfeld and Leoben.
Saint Stefan ob Leoben is also one of the oldest mining areas in Styria; there is evidence that mining was first carried out as early as 1581, and graphite has been mined continuously in the Kaisersberg graphite mine since 1755. This makes it the oldest mining operation in continuous operation. But also copper ore, clay iron, chrome and magnesite were mined in the municipal area of St. Stefan ob Leoben.
St. Stefan ob Leoben can be particularly proud of the fact that the inventor of the ship's propeller, the k. u. k. Marine Ing. Josef Ressel had the tubular boiler for his experimental ship "Civetta" built in the iron smelting works in Vorlobming in 1828. That is why the golden ship's propeller can be found in the municipal coat of arms of Sankt Stefan ob Leoben, which we received from the Styrian provincial government in 1971.
