Maria Wörth (slow.: Otok) is a municipality in the district of Klagenfurt-Land in Carinthia. The namesake church was mentioned in documents as early as the 9th century as "Maria Werd". The village of Maria Wörth is located on a peninsula on the southern shore of Lake Wörthersee, about 14 kilometers west of Klagenfurt.
Culture and sights
The parish and former collegiate church of St. Primus and Felician is located on the highest point of the peninsula. Probably built under Bishop Waldo of Freising (ruled 884-906), first mentioned in a document in 894, the church in its present appearance is late Gothic with a Romanesque core and served as a translatio of the relics of the martyrs Primus and Felicianus.
The Winter Church (also called the Rosary Church) is located to the west and slightly below the parish church and is a small building surrounded by a cemetery wall in the style of early medieval choir square churches.
Reifnitz Castle ("Klein Miramar"), built in 1898, is located on a promontory at the northern edge of Reifnitz Bay.
Villa Schwarzenfels in Maiernigg was built and inhabited as a vacation villa in 1893/94 by the Viennese architect Friedrich Theuer. The two-story villa in the late historic style "old German" is situated in a dominant position on a bastion-like terrace above the lake.
In the district of Sekirn, on the southern shore of Lake Wörthersee, stands the Villa Siegel. The striking building goes back to the composer Gustav Mahler, who spent his summer holidays there from 1900 to 1907.
In the Sekirn district, Helmut Horten had the Roman Catholic Filial Church of St. Hubertus built as a mausoleum in 1976/77, where he was also buried after his death.
