Ligist is a market town in western Styria, about ten kilometers southeast of the district capital Voitsberg. The Schilchermarkt Ligist is located in the West Styrian hill country at the beginning of the Schilcher wine route. The village itself is enclosed all around by hills where wine and fruit are grown.
Culture and sights
On October 26, 1969, the local history museum was ceremoniously opened in the Hammerherrenhaus (formerly Gasthaus Trummer). In 1973, the local history museum moved to the castle of the Sovereign Order of Knights of Malta.
Since 2014, the Museum Ligist is located in the Schmiedhiaslhammer house (a former forge, opposite the elementary school).
Music
On June 18, 1954, under the chairmanship of Mayor MR Dr. Anton Saurugg and in the presence of the mayors of Krottendorf, Unterwald, Oberwald, Steinberg, Gaisfeld, Grabenwarth and St. Johann, the music school was founded. In the school year 1975/76 it got new premises in the elementary school Ligist. Since 1981, there has also been a school branch of the Ligist Music School in Söding. By the 1998/99 organization statute for music schools in Styria it attained public right. In the anniversary year 2004 the old fire station of the voluntary fire department Ligist was rebuilt into a modern music school building, which could be solemnly handed over to its purpose in October 2004.
Buildings
Ligist Castle Ruins: The victory of Emperor Otto the Great over the Hungarians in 955 resulted in the construction of a fortification belt and thus the creation of the above-mentioned "Dietenburg". This fortification was confirmed by documents around the year 1060.
Today's Ligist Castle reached its final stage of development towards the end of the 17th century. Today, only the remains of the walls and the altar from 1625 (now in the Grabenwarth Chapel) are left of Ligist Castle.
Parish church Ligist: It is not documented when Ligist had a church. However, a modest church existed 700 years ago, which was then expanded and consecrated in 1473 on the Sunday after Peter and Paul. This event is still commemorated on the festival Sunday around July 1. The church got its present size in the 19th century.
Attached to the church is the Saurau burial chapel. 13 larger and 13 smaller coffins are buried in the crypt.
At the entrances to the church one can see four stone figures on gate-like pedestals. In front of the main entrance they represent St. Catherine (with the wheel) and St. Barbara (with the tower); coming from the market square side, one sees St. Peter (with the key) and St. Paul (with the sword).
