With 24,921 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2022), Krems an der Donau is the fifth largest city in Lower Austria and is located on the Danube 70 km west of Vienna. As a statutory city, it fulfills the functions of both a municipality and a district; in addition, it is the administrative seat of the district of Krems-Land. Today, the city is a commercial center, a cultural center, and a school and university center.
The old town of Krems is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape Wachau, which was recognized in 2000.
The landmark of Krems is the Steiner Tor, a preserved city gate, which was extensively restored in 2005.
Both the Krems district and the Stein district have closed old-town structures. Since the main focus of trade and commerce has retreated to the Krems district or the shopping centers on the eastern outskirts of the city over the past 50 years, the Stein district has remained largely unchanged in structural terms. However, the small commercial uses as well as the small retail businesses have largely disappeared.
In recent years, numerous initiatives have been undertaken to revitalize the Stein district and the former monastery Und, located between Krems and Stein. Particularly noteworthy are the Kunsthalle Krems (with changing exhibitions, focusing on contemporary art) as well as the Karikaturmuseum Krems (permanent exhibition of the artists Manfred Deix and the architect and caricaturist Gustav Peichl (Ironimus) as well as special shows), a literature house and local initiatives.
