Mautern an der Donau is a municipality with 3452 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2022) on the southern bank of the Danube in Lower Austria, opposite Krems/Stein.
Culture and sights
In Mautern there are many places where archaeological excavations can be found - graves, walls, wine cellars that date back to the Romans. The modern Roman Hall, which serves as an event hall, and the "Roman Museum Favianis-St. Severin" bear witness to the often tourist-motivated contemplation of days long past.
Parish Church of St. Stephen; it was built in the second half of the 14th century, although the northern choir side chapel (mortuary chapel) is older (end of the 14th century). In 1695/96 Carlo Antonio Carlone rebuilt the interior of the nave and baroqueized it. The mighty, three-story church tower in the southern choir corner was built over a medieval core from 1774 to 1777 by the master builder Karl Ehmann.
Mautern Castle on the northern edge of the old town is the successor to a medieval fortified courtyard that served as the official residence of the keepers and captains who exercised landlordship on behalf of the Passau bishops. Each of the four castle wings dates from a different era. The castle chapel, which was profaned in the 18th century, was extensively restored in 2017-2018; since then, the "Mautern Altar", an early Baroque masterpiece created around 1620, can be seen in it again.
In the center of the village there is an important complex of buildings called Janaburg, originally from 1576.
Baumgarten Castle, a multi-wing Baroque building with two courtyards is located in the southern cadastral village of the same name.
