The responsible district administrative authority is the mayor. The city is located at the foot of the Leitha Mountains and, with its 15,729 (as of January 1, 2023) 
inhabitants, it is the smallest provincial capital in Austria. In terms of population, Eisenstadt ranks 38th on the list of Austrian cities 
behind Bruck an der Mur. Eisenstadt is located at the southern foot of the Leitha Mountains on a terrace that gradually slopes down to the Wulka Plain at an altitude of 182 meters above sea level.
Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the area surrounding the Celtic hilltop settlement of Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg. 
Later, under the Romans, today's Eisenstadt was part of the province of Pannonia.
