Sankt Margarethen im Burgenland is a market town with 2734 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2023) in Burgenland in the district of Eisenstadt-Umgebung in Austria.
The Hungarian place name of the municipality is Szentmargitbánya. The municipality is located in northern Burgenland near the provincial capital Eisenstadt. Sankt Margarethen
im Burgenland is the only village in the municipality. Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the
Celtic hilltop settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg. Later, under the Romans, today's Sankt Margarethen was part of the province of Pannonia.
Sankt Margarethen in Burgenland has been a market town since 1647 and, like the whole of Burgenland, belonged to Hungary (German West Hungary) until 1920/21.
Culture and sights
St. Margarethen Roman quarry: The most famous sight is the Roman quarry, where St. Margarethen sand-lime brick is still quarried today.
Among other things, the building material for Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral was extracted here, but also later for the construction of many buildings along Vienna's Ringstrasse.

St. Margarethen parish church in Burgenland: Another attraction in St. Margarethen is the parish church, which is essentially Gothic in style. The current building was completed in 1516
completed. The baroque sandstone pulpit dates back to 1795 and the church was extended in 1959/60. The chancel was redesigned in 1991.
