Scheibbs is a municipality and seat of the district administration with 4130 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2022) in the eponymous district of Scheibbs in the Eisenwurzen region of Lower Austria in the Mostviertel region. The municipal area extends over a large part of the middle Erlauf Valley. The town of Scheibbs itself is located about 20 km south of the Westautobahn or the Danube at Ybbs and is the historical, administrative and medical center of the district of Scheibbs. Economically, in addition to the administrative and service sectors, the production of elevators occupies a prominent position in the municipality; furthermore, the population is employed in particular in small and medium-sized enterprises or in agriculture. Scheibbs, at the transition between the hilly and gentle foothills of the Alps and the mountainous foothills of the Alps, is considered the gateway to the Ötscherland and, as a transhipment point for agricultural products and iron products, was one of the most important and prosperous towns in the iron industry north of the Alps, along with Steyr and Waidhofen an der Ybbs. The centuries-old heritage of the Eisenwurzen region is hardly noticeable in the operating landscape, nor are the historically strong ties with Gaming Charterhouse, whose property Scheibbs was for centuries.
