Culture and sights
Founded in 1091, the Benedictine Abbey of St. Paul is a castle complex that served as the ancestral seat of the Dukes of Carinthia. Today the monastery is the oldest still active monastery in Carinthia and has one of the largest art collections in Europe as well as an extensive and important library.
The castle was also built in 1091 to protect the monastery as Ramestein Castle. It was destroyed in 1307, rebuilt and was destroyed a second time by fire in 1636.
The building for the convict of the monastery high school was built in 1889 in neo-Gothic style and extended in 1909.
Ölbründl: Dietrich von Spanheim (1253-1303), from the house of the founders of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Paul, lived as a hermit in a cave in the forest north of the Johannesberg. Near his dwelling this spring gushed out of the mountain. Many sick people made pilgrimages to the hermit, who was said to be able to heal the sick. For this purpose, he drew water from this spring with his hand, which immediately turned into oil. With it he rubbed the sick and healed them. When he died, he was buried on the hill under a chapel. Later, the Church of St. John was built on it.
