Rottenmann is a mountain town in the province of Styria (Austria). The town is located in the Rottenmanner Tauern mountains and in the Paltental valley, of which Rottenmann is the main town. Rottenmann is also the oldest town in the district and one of the oldest in Austria.
The town is known, among other things, for its historic old town center and the headquarters of AHT (Austria Haustechnik). Sights include Strechau Castle, which is perched on a monumental rock in the municipal area of the neighboring municipality of Lassing, Grünbühel Castle, Thalhof Castle, and "Das Schloss" (former Augustinian canons' monastery) in the old town. The steeple of the Rottenmann parish church was for a time the highest in Styria.
Culture and sights
Rottenmann town fortifications
Grünbühel Castle: Grünbühel Castle, also known as Grünbichl Castle, is located north of the town of Rottenmann in the Villmannsdorf district.
Catholic Filial Church Alt-Rottenmann St. George: The church of St. George was built in 1042 as the first Rottenmann parish church (hence the name Alt-Rottenmann) in Romanesque style. Reconsecration in 1313 by Bishop Heinrich von Gurk, after it had been destroyed by Turks and Tatars.
Until the 1950s, Sankt Georgen was the destination of pilgrims from neighboring parishes (Lassing is documented), who held a procession to Rottenmann on St. George's Day.
Catholic parish church of Rottenmann St. Nicholas: The first church was built in the first half of the 13th century by the town, financed from the income of the road toll.
The oldest frescoes in the parish church date back to 1509-1513. All frescoes were whitewashed at the latest during the renovation in 1884 (the year on the pulpit), but were uncovered again during the renovation in 1953.
