Winden am See (Hungarian: Sásony) is a municipality in the district of Neusiedl am See in Burgenland in Austria). The entire municipality belongs to the Nature Park Neusiedlersee - Leithagebirge.
Culture and sights
Parish Church Winden am See: Baroque church building, erected in 1725 by the imperial court stonemason and church builder Elias Hügel, after the old parish church was burned down by the Turkish invasion in 1683. Two west towers. 1997/98 contemporary redesign of the popular altar and ambo by Wander Bertoni.
Wander Bertoni open-air museum: The open-air museum of the sculptor Wander Bertoni was integrated into the old Gritsch mill, about 480 objects are on display; construction of a new exhibition pavilion by the architect Johannes Spalt.
Zeilerberg: The Zeilerberg with its dry grasslands provides the habitat for many species of butterflies and other rare insects of the Pannonian climate zone. The Zeilerberg is located about 3 km north of Winden am See.
Windener Kirchberg: the Kirchberg to the east of the village is home to a dry grassland with an occurrence of the very rare sand lotus.
Bärenhöhle (Bear Cave): at the foot of the Zeilerberg lie the entrances to the Bärenhöhle (Bear Cave), where the Great Mouse-Eared Bat, Austria's largest bat species, has its lair. Skeletons of cave bears and other extinct mammal species have been discovered in the cave. The cave has been a protected monument since February 4, 1929.
The Sun Worshipper, made by Wander Bertoni, on the church hill is the largest sculpture in the municipality and was erected in 1963.
