Lake Neusiedl offers something for everyone: discover the unspoiled nature, enjoy the magnificent view of the water or explore the region with its diverse recreational opportunities.
Illmitz (Hungarian Illmic) is a market town in the district of Neusiedl am See in Burgenland in Austria. It is located in the east of Lake Neusiedl in the so-called Seewinkel. Illmitz is the largest municipality (in terms of area) in Burgenland. The municipality borders Hungary to the south, Lake Neusiedl to the west, Podersdorf am See to the north and the hotter borders of Apetlon to the east.
Culture and sights
The parish church Illmitz St. Bartholomew is a Catholic parish church. Since the old St. Martin's Church on the hill near Kirchsee was difficult to reach, a chapel dedicated to the Holy Family was built in the village in 1715.
War memorial with Pietà: On the main square in front of the fountain originally stood a stone sculpture from 1757. Today the war memorial stands on the newly designed square in front of the parish office.
St. Bartholomew's Spring: Because of the shallow and mostly open village wells at that time, whose water was exceedingly highly mineralized and which in most cases did not contain perfect water from a hygienic point of view, the Bartholomäus spring was built in 1930/31.
The townscape: Numerous storks nesting on the roofs of Illmitz characterize the townscape. In Illmitz, old reed-roofed houses have been preserved until today.
Zwerchhof: the Zwerchenhof with baroque gable and thatched roof is the oldest preserved farmhouse. The house is a listed building and is considered the best preserved farmhouse in the Seewinkel region. It is partly over 250 years old, built of pressed adobe bricks and has a restored courtyard and an old wine press. From this baroque farmhouse and the neighboring Ganglhof arose the Florianihof of today, which has burned several times.
Kreuzscheune Illmitz: The listed Pußtascheune houses a Heurigen tavern.
Surroundings: Old draw wells and the characteristic reed huts of the shepherds can still be seen in the surrounding area.
Lake Neusiedl-Seewinkel National Park: The national park was opened in 1993.
Lake Neusiedl: Illmitz is located on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl.
