The Lower Austrian municipality of Melk is located on the right bank of the Danube and, seen in the direction of flow, is known as "the gateway to the Wachau". Parts of the town, such as Melk Abbey, are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wachau. Melk is the district capital of the district of the same name.

On the town hall square in front of the town hall is the Kolomanibrunnen from 1689.

In the immediate vicinity you can find the Renaissance Schallaburg Castle and Artstetten Castle. In the Melk City Museum there is the famous 6,500 year old idol with the bird's face.
