With 28,967 inhabitants, Leonding is the fourth largest city in Upper Austria. In the north it borders with the Danube on Puchenau, in the east on Linz, in the south on Traun and in the west on Pasching and Wilhering. Leonding belongs to the political district of Linz-Land, the competent judicial district is the judicial district of Traun.

Until the first half of the 20th century, Leonding was largely rural with about 5,000 inhabitants, but strong population growth, which has continued to this day, led to a major boom. In 1975, Leonding was elevated to the status of a city, and since 2011 it has been the largest city in the district.

Today, the city is known primarily as the headquarters of several large industrial companies and as a green residential area, some of which is still quite rural, on the outskirts of the large city of Linz. Together with its neighboring municipalities, Leonding is part of the second largest metropolitan area in the Republic of Austria.

While the name of the city in Leonding is usually stressed on the first syllable ([?le???nd?i?]), the stress in the rest of Austria is usually on the o ([le??nd?i?]).
