The mountain village of Hüttschlag is located at 1,020 m, about 8 km from Großarl. Hüttschlag has an area of 95.18 km². 1/3 of Hüttschlag's municipal territory has belonged to the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest national park in the Alps, since 1991.
Since 2008, Hüttschlag has also been one of the "Mountaineering Villages of Austria" selected according to strict criteria, a project of the Austrian Alpine Club as part of the implementation of the International Alpine Convention. This demonstrates the hiking and mountain competence of Hüttschlag.
In winter, Hüttschlag is directly connected to the Großarltal-Dorfgastein ski circuit by a free ski bus. Especially for cross-country skiers, winter hikers and ski tourers, Hüttschlag is a small paradise at the entrance to the Hohe Tauern National Park.
